# Fiberglass Grating for Docks, Piers and Marinas

Fiberglass dock grating is open fiberglass decking that does not rust in salt water and lets light and water pass through. Specify a UV-inhibited resin for the marine exposure, a gritted surface (fine grit where people go barefoot), and a depth from your span and design load. ## What should fiberglass dock grating be specified for?

Decide the grating type, depth, panel size, surface, resin, UV protection, color and hold-down clips. The table shows what US makers commonly offer and what Strongrate’s 2023 catalog lists. One US maker markets its molded grating with a 3/4" (19 mm) top mesh for docks in 4 ft × 12 ft (1220 × 3660 mm) panels.

## Which resin and UV protection suit salt water?

Fiberglass grating does not rust, but the resin still has to suit the exposure. US makers use isophthalic polyester for general industrial service and vinyl ester for harsher chemical service, and offer phenolic for marine and offshore work. Strongrate’s catalog lists fire-retardant vinyl ester, which it rates for superior corrosion resistance, and isophthalic polyester for molded and pultruded grating, plus orthophthalic polyester for molded only; its chemical chart has no seawater entry. For docks in sun and spray, ask for a UV-inhibited resin. Strongwell’s guide specification states that “FRP products exposed to weather shall contain an ultraviolet inhibitor.” Strongrate’s catalog says its molded resin carries UV inhibitors and that colors hold for more than 12 months in sunlight, a catalog statement rather than a warranty. Name splash or immersion service in your quote request so the resin is matched to it.

## Which surface works for bare feet and wet decks?

Molded grating normally has a concave (meniscus) top or an applied quartz grit. For barefoot areas, suppliers also offer a fine “aqua” or barefoot grit instead of the standard coarse quartz grit. Strongrate’s catalog offers gritted and concave tops on molded grating and states a slip coefficient of 0.91 for its normal grit, citing ASTM D2047. If the dock is part of an accessible route, the 2010 ADA Standards require that openings in the walking surface not pass a 1/2" (13 mm) sphere, that elongated openings run perpendicular to the main direction of travel, and that the surface be stable, firm and slip resistant. Open grating also lets light and water pass to the water below. Typical molded grating is about 70% open with a 1-1/2" (38 mm) square mesh, and mini-mesh about 44%. Strongrate’s catalog lists its 1-1/2" square mesh at 52–78% open by depth and its mini meshes at 30–60%. If your dock permit sets a minimum open area or light-penetration figure, include it in your quote request.

## What load, span and panel weight should dock grating be designed for?

Your engineer sets the dock’s design live load and deflection limit. US grating load tables list deflection by clear span for uniform loads in psf and for concentrated line loads in lb per foot of width. Common walkway limits are 3/8" (9.5 mm) or L/120 for comfort and 1/4" (6.4 mm) or L/200 where a firmer feel is wanted. ## Which certificates matter for marine projects?

For grating on vessels and offshore installations, ASTM F3059 is the fire-integrity standard. The six Strongrate models on DNV Type Approval TAF0000191 Rev. 1 are rated structural fire integrity L0 per ASTM F3059-15. The approval is a fire-technical evaluation only: it does not approve structural strength, and acceptance is case by case. For context, published FRP price guides (2025 or undated, read Oct 15, 2026) put molded grating at about $12–$18 per sq ft and add $1–$3 per sq ft for grit, and one US online FRP grating store listed 4 ft × 12 ft (1220 × 3660 mm) mini-mesh panels at $570 for 1" (25 mm) deep and $780 for 1-1/2" (38 mm) deep on Oct 15, 2026. ## Frequently asked questions

### Will fiberglass dock grating fade or lose its grit in the sun?

Sun is the reason specifications guard against it: Strongwell’s guide specification requires a UV inhibitor in FRP exposed to weather, and its pultruded spec holds the grit wear index below 1.0 (ASTM D4060) before and after 750 hours of UV exposure. Strongrate’s catalog states that colors hold for more than 12 months in sunlight.

### How do I fit dock grating around pilings?

Cut the openings in the field with carbide or diamond tooling and seal every cut edge with resin. One US supplier states that openings up to 10" (254 mm) can be cut in molded grating without added support, depending on depth; check any larger opening with the load table and your engineer.

### What clips should hold grating down on a saltwater dock?

US guide specifications call for Type 316 stainless steel hold-down clips spaced no more than 4 ft (1.22 m) apart, with at least four per piece.
