# Pultruded Fiberglass Grating: I-Bar and T-Bar

_Updated Oct 17, 2026_

Pultruded fiberglass grating is assembled from glass-rich pultruded bars joined by cross bars, so it is stiffer along the bars than molded grating. Strongrate's catalog lists 36 pultruded types in I-bar and T-bar profiles, with 60–65% glass content and panels up to 5 ft × 20 ft (1524 × 6100 mm). Its two DNV-listed models, I 6015 and T5020, each have an ASTM E84-19a flame spread index of 20.

## Which pultruded grating types does Strongrate list?

The T-bar pedestrian series comes in 1" (25 mm), 1-1/2" (38 mm) and 2" (50 mm) depths at 12–50% open area, and the I-bar industrial series in 1" (25 mm), 1-3/16" (30 mm) and 1-1/2" (38 mm) at 40–60%. All types use cross bars at 6" (152 mm) centers, with the bearing bars along the panel length.

## What are the HI, HL and SI series for?

HI and HL are high-load I-bar grating: HI in 1" (25 mm), 1-1/2" (38 mm), 2" (50 mm), 2-1/2" (64 mm) and 3" (76 mm) depths at 47–58% open, and HL at 2" (50 mm), weighing 4.3–15.1 lb/ft² (21.0–73.6 kg/m²). SI is a lighter, more open standard I-bar at 1" (25 mm) and 1-1/2" (38 mm), 73–83% open and 1.7–3.8 lb/ft² (8.5–18.6 kg/m²). Vehicle or forklift use needs review by your engineer.

## Should you choose I-bar or T-bar pultruded grating?

_Diagram: Pultruded T-bar grating: wide top flanges form the walking surface, in section. Schematic — not to scale._

I-bars have a flange at the top and the bottom; T-bars have a wide top flange, so the openings sit between flanges at the walking surface and the open area is lower (12–50% for T-bar against 40–60% for I-bar in Strongrate's catalog). Against molded grating, pultruded spans farther along its bars, while molded carries load both ways; see [molded vs pultruded fiberglass grating](https://www.strongrate.us/compare/molded-vs-pultruded-fiberglass-grating/).

1. Take the design load and deflection limit from your specification.
2. Pick the shallowest profile whose load table meets both at your clear span ([fiberglass grating load tables](https://www.strongrate.us/resources/fiberglass-grating-load-tables/)).
3. Check the clear opening where small objects must not fall through, or where the route must be accessible.
4. Choose the resin for the chemicals and temperatures on site, then compare prices on the same resin and open area.

## What fire test results does Strongrate have for pultruded grating?

**Strongrate pultruded grating models on DNV Type Approval TAF0000191 Rev. 1, with ASTM E84-19a results**

| DNV model | Profile | Resin | Flame spread index (FSI) | Smoke-developed index (SDI) | Structural fire integrity | Depth (per catalog) |
| --- | --- | --- | ---: | ---: | --- | --- |
| I 6015 [note 1] | Pultruded I-bar [note 1] | Isophthalic polyester [note 1] | 20 [note 2] | 400 [note 2] | L0 per ASTM F3059-15 [note 3] | 1-1/2" (38 mm) [note 4] |
| T5020 [note 1] | Pultruded T-bar [note 1] | Vinyl ester [note 1] | 20 [note 2] | 300 [note 2] | L0 per ASTM F3059-15 [note 3] | 2" (50 mm) [note 4] |

_Results as listed on the DNV certificate (ASTM E84-19a), valid until Feb 10, 2027; the depth column is from Strongrate’s 2023 catalog. Each result applies to its own model and resin. The certificate covers fire performance, not load capacity._

Notes:

1. Bar depth and open area are not stated on the certificate.
2. Result as listed on DNV certificate TAF0000191 Rev. 1 (ASTM E84-19a); applies to this model only.
3. As stated on the certificate; acceptance for a given location is case by case.
4. Values as printed in the factory catalog (2023); confirmed in your quote and submittal drawings.

Both flame spread indexes are within the 25 that US specifications call Class 1 or Class A, and both smoke-developed indexes within the 450 building-code limit. ## Which resins and surfaces are available?

Three fire-retardant resins for pultruded grating: vinyl ester (VEFR), isophthalic polyester (IFR) and food-grade isophthalic polyester (FG). Tops are corrugated (slotted), gritted or smooth, with solid covers in checker or grit finish.

**Strongrate resin systems: catalog data**

| Code | Resin | Use | Corrosion resistance | Products | Max temperature |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | ---: |
| VEFR [note 1] | Vinyl ester | Superior corrosion resistance, fire retardant | Excellent | Molded and pultruded | 230°F (110°C) [note 1] |
| IFR [note 1] | Isophthalic polyester | Industrial-grade corrosion resistance, fire retardant | Very good | Molded and pultruded | 176°F (80°C) [note 1] |
| FG [note 1] | Isophthalic polyester, food grade | Food-grade corrosion resistance, fire retardant | Very good | Molded and pultruded | 176°F (80°C) [note 1] |
| OFR [note 1] | Orthophthalic polyester | Moderate corrosion resistance, fire retardant | Moderate | Molded only | 158°F (70°C) [note 1] |

_As printed in Strongrate’s 2023 product catalog; confirmed in your quote and submittal drawings. The catalog rates every resin system ASTM E84 Class 1 (flame spread 25 or less); test results on file cover only the DNV-listed models. Its chemical-resistance chart prints lower maximum temperatures (vinyl ester 185°F (85°C), isophthalic 158°F (70°C), general-purpose polyester 149°F (65°C))._

Notes:

1. Maximum service temperatures as printed in the catalog’s resin table.

- General information from resin makers’ data, as printed in the catalog; testing in the actual environment is recommended.

## How do you order pultruded grating?

Made in Nantong, China, and shipped from China. Full containers and project quantities are quoted factory-direct; orders under about 500 sq ft, or needed in under 3 weeks, are referred to US stock. See the [fiberglass grating price per square foot](https://www.strongrate.us/pricing/fiberglass-grating-price/) basis, [lead times, MOQ and shipping](https://www.strongrate.us/buy-direct/lead-times-moq-and-shipping/), or [request a quote](https://www.strongrate.us/request-quote/).

Pultruded grating takes its own hold-down clips; see [fiberglass grating clips](https://www.strongrate.us/accessories/fiberglass-grating-clips/), [how to install fiberglass grating](https://www.strongrate.us/resources/how-to-install-fiberglass-grating/) and [how to cut fiberglass grating](https://www.strongrate.us/resources/how-to-cut-fiberglass-grating/).

## Frequently asked questions

### Is pultruded grating weaker across the bars than along them?

It is built to carry load along its bearing bars, which run parallel to the panel length on stock panels, with cross bars tying the bars together. Molded grating is cast in one piece with strength in both directions, so it fits better where load must be carried both ways. Plan panel length so the bars span between the supports.

### Can I get a sample of pultruded grating before ordering?

Yes, ask through the [samples page](https://www.strongrate.us/samples/), which lists the DNV-listed pultruded models I 6015 and T5020.

### Can pultruded grating be used on an accessible route?

Only if its openings do not pass a 1/2" (13 mm) sphere and the slots run perpendicular to the dominant direction of travel (ADA 302.3). [Mini mesh ADA grating](https://www.strongrate.us/molded-fiberglass-grating/mini-mesh-ada/) is the molded alternative.
