Choose covered fiberglass grating when the project calls for a solid walking surface rather than open mesh. Strongrate’s catalog lists solid covers with checker or grit finishes. Specify the complete assembly: cover, underlying grating, overall depth, support layout and loads. A cover finish alone does not establish structural capacity or a watertight installation.

Choose the top surface around the work area
| Project need | Selection guidance |
|---|---|
| A continuous top between supports | Specify covered grating and detail panel joints, edges, cutouts and removable sections. |
| Water must pass through the walking surface | Compare open molded grating. If using a cover, show a separate route for drainage on the design. |
| Smaller walking-surface openings | Compare mini-mesh grating when an open surface is still required. |
| A wheel or equipment load | Use the heavy-duty grating review to define wheel contact, clear span and support conditions. |
For trench covers, mark which pieces must lift out, the clear opening below and the available bearing around it. For industrial walkways, include changes in elevation, adjoining floors and service penetrations. A solid top is a construction choice; containment, sealing and fall-protection requirements need their own design review.
Compare checker and grit finishes
Strongrate’s catalog lists both finishes for solid covers. Request a surface sample of the proposed finish and review it against footwear, cleaning methods and the expected water, oil or process residue. State the project’s required surface test and acceptance criteria. Do not use a result for ordinary open grating as proof of performance for a different cover finish.
Describe the exposure for both the top and underside of the panel. Use the chemical-resistance guide to organize chemical names, concentrations, temperature and contact duration. Include cleaning chemicals and outdoor exposure in the specification so the resin and surface can be reviewed together.
Check the complete assembly against the supports
List overall depth separately from the depth of the supporting grating and the cover thickness. Show the clear span, bearing surfaces, support width and panel orientation on a drawing. Include concentrated loads, moving equipment and openings near the edge. Compare the proposed assembly with the project’s allowable deflection as well as its design load.
The catalog load-table guide explains how to read span and deflection. An open-grid table is not evidence for an unspecified covered assembly. Ask the quotation to identify the exact assembly covered by its load data, along with fastening details and any reinforcement around access openings. Do not assume that adding a cover creates a vehicle-rated panel.
Prepare a comparable covered-grating quote
- Panel schedule: finished length and width, piece count, cutouts, edge details and removable sections.
- Assembly: required overall depth, checker or grit finish, resin requirements and color preference.
- Structure: dimensioned support drawing, clear spans, bearing details, loads and deflection criteria.
- Site conditions: drainage route, chemicals, temperature, cleaning, pedestrian or equipment traffic.
- Delivery: destination ZIP code, required arrival date and whether fabrication and hardware belong in the same scope.
Compare quotations for the same finished assembly, fabrication and delivery basis. Keep freight, packing, hardware and any testing separate from the panel price. Use the grating quote comparison tool to record differences, and the factory-direct ordering guide to prepare the commercial scope.
