Choose fiberglass walkway grating from the clear span, support arrangement, load case and exposure at each location. Separate pedestrian routes from cart crossings and equipment platforms. Then coordinate panel direction, surface, openings, cutouts and hold-down clips with the access layout. A panel selection does not establish the capacity of the complete platform.
Define the walking route and platform boundaries
Mark the route, changes in level, maintenance positions and removable sections on a plan. Fiberglass catwalk grating may serve a narrow inspection route, while a maintenance platform can include equipment footprints and working space. Record each area separately so one pedestrian load description does not stand in for the whole installation.
Use the fiberglass grating product range for panel choices. State whether the purchase covers panels alone or includes framing, stairs and handrails. For a replacement catwalk, identify retained members and record the recess depth and finished walking level before selecting the new grating.
Match load cases to the clear span and supports
| Use | Record with the support drawing |
|---|---|
| Pedestrian inspection route | Specified live load, clear span, bearing edges and deflection criteria |
| Cart crossing or maintenance access | Loaded wheel forces, contact areas, travel path and any impact |
| Equipment platform | Operating and maintenance loads, support footprints, duration and vibration |
| Removable access panel | Opening and bearing dimensions, lifting space and restraint details |
Strongrate’s catalog tables describe static loads at ambient temperature and include an impact-load note. Have the responsible engineer review the selected configuration and support structure, including sustained loads or elevated temperatures. Read the load and deflection tables by load type; panel thickness alone does not establish an allowable span.
Choose the panel family, resin and walking surface
Molded grating is formed as one panel; pultruded grating uses bearing bars joined by cross rods. Mark the pultruded bearing-bar direction between supports. Follow the stated load direction for rectangular molded meshes. Use the molded-versus-pultruded comparison alongside the proposed layout.
Record chemicals, concentration, temperature and contact duration using the chemical-exposure guide. Compare surface samples for the actual footwear and cleaning conditions. Strongrate’s catalog lists several surface options; an opening pattern or gritted finish alone does not establish suitability for every walking route.
Coordinate cutouts, clips and access components
Dimension penetrations and trimmed edges before approving the panel layout. Have the designer review the remaining load path and any additional support around a cutout. Coordinate bearing, hold-down locations and removable panels using the installation guide and grating clip range. Follow the cutting guide for fabrication and sealing cut edges.
Show the attachment interface for handrails and fixed ladders, stair treads and structural profiles. Do not assume a grating panel is the anchorage for a guard or ladder. Include support-member and connection details in the assembly review.
For specialized exposure, use the wastewater access checklist or dock and marina guidance. Keep their chemical, opening and maintenance requirements attached to the relevant panel IDs.
