Estimate fiberglass grating material weight
Updated
Multiply the grating area by the catalog weight per square foot to estimate material weight. Select the exact mesh, depth or pultruded type first: weight varies by specification. The result supports quantity and handling discussions; it excludes packing, clips and other installation materials and does not give load capacity.
The formula and source of the weight
Material weight (lb) = grating area (sq ft) × catalog area weight (lb/ft²). The same method applies in metric units: area (m²) × area weight (kg/m²). Calculations use the catalog’s original metric values and convert the result for display.
In Project area mode, enter the combined grating area for the calculation. For a molded specification with catalog panel sizes, Panel quantity mode calculates the selected panel area and multiplies its material weight by the number of panels. Pultruded specifications use Project area mode. If the order contains different meshes, depths or bar types, calculate each specification separately and add the results; one selected area weight cannot represent a mixed order.
Strongrate’s catalog gives area weights for molded mesh-and-depth combinations and for pultruded bar types. The pultruded weights follow the catalog’s summary specification table. These are catalog-derived estimates, with product values confirmed in the quote and submittal drawings.
Review the complete catalog size and weight tables or use the specification finder to compare the available rows.
Choose the area that matches the planning task
- For a full-panel order, use the combined area of all panels in the order, including material that will become offcuts.
- For an installed-material estimate, use the scheduled grating area and account for the actual cutouts and finished pieces.
- For a delivery or lifting plan, obtain the finished-piece weights, package dimensions and gross shipping weights for the actual order.
The panel quantity calculator gives an area-based starting count for molded panels. For pultruded grating, specify the bar type and panel dimensions in the schedule. Review ordering and shipping information before requesting transport pricing.
Frequently asked questions
Is calculated grating weight the freight weight?
No. The calculation covers grating material only. Packing, pallets, clips, other supplied components and the final fabrication affect the shipment. Use the order’s packing details for freight and unloading decisions.
Can I use this weight result to check a working load?
No. Material weight is the grating’s own mass, while load capacity depends on the exact product, clear span, load type, supports and design criteria. Review the load and deflection tables with the project engineer.
