FRP means fiber-reinforced polymer or plastic: reinforcing fibers combined with a polymer resin matrix. In fiberglass grating, the reinforcement is glass fiber. GRP and GFRP identify this glass-reinforced group. An order for FRP grating also needs the construction, resin, panel geometry and load requirements; the acronym does not identify a specific product.
FRP, GRP and fiberglass: reading the terminology
| Term | Meaning | What to establish |
|---|---|---|
| FRP | Fiber-reinforced plastic; the wider family can use glass, carbon or other reinforcing fibers. | Identify the actual reinforcement and resin. |
| GRP | Glass-reinforced plastic: the glass-fiber subset of FRP. | Compare the specified configuration, not only the acronym. |
| GFRP | Glass fiber-reinforced polymer. | Identify whether the item is a grating panel, profile or other component. |
| Fiberglass grating | A product description for glass-reinforced grating panels. | State molded or pultruded construction, dimensions and resin. |
An RFQ that says only “FRP panels” leaves the product form unclear. A solid sheet, wall panel, grating panel and structural profile are different purchases. Attach a drawing or product designation and describe the intended use before comparing prices.
Reinforcement and resin have different roles
The fibers provide reinforcement; the resin forms the surrounding matrix. Resin chemistry, fiber arrangement and the manufacturing process are part of the material description. The word fiberglass alone does not specify a resin grade or a structural capacity.
Strongrate’s catalog lists vinyl ester and polyester resin systems for its grating range. Choose from the documented options using the chemical, concentration, temperature and contact pattern in your project. The chemical-resistance guide connects those inputs to the catalog chart; record the selected chart conditions with the proposed resin.
Choose the product form before comparing specifications

Compare mesh, depth, panel dimensions and surface against the proposed supports and openings.

Specify the bearing-bar model and direction, span, cross-rod arrangement and resin.

Select the beam, channel, tube or angle section, then provide member lengths and connection details.

Coordinate the assembly layout, mounting surfaces and attachment interfaces with the supporting structure.
For stairs, distinguish a load-bearing grating tread from a cover for an existing sound step. For flooring, distinguish the grating panel from the complete walkway or platform assembly. A product name does not replace the support and connection drawings.
Is FRP grating the same as plastic grating?
“Plastic grating” is a broad search description. Establish whether the proposed panel has glass reinforcement and identify its resin and construction. Do not substitute an unreinforced plastic floor tile for a specified fiberglass grating panel simply because both products have an open surface. Compare the actual product documentation and intended loading.
Terms such as composite grating, FRP grating and GRP grating can describe the same glass-reinforced product in a specification. Use the fiberglass grating overview to select a family, then use the molded-versus-pultruded guide to compare construction. Keep one unambiguous product designation on the order.
What to include when ordering FRP grating
- Name the application and product form, then attach a marked layout or part drawing.
- Record dimensions, clear spans, bearing direction, load cases and deflection criteria. Check the catalog load tables for the selected configuration.
- Describe chemicals, temperature, outdoor exposure, walking surface and cleaning conditions.
- Identify required test documents and have the responsible designer review their product-specific scope. A material acronym is not a fire, access or structural approval.
- List quantities, cutouts, clips and related components. Use the specification finder to compare catalog entries, then send the schedule with your quote request.
Strongrate products are made in Nantong, China, and ship from China. Include your delivery ZIP or postal code and required date when reviewing factory-direct ordering.
